Leon Madsen won the first round of this year's TAURON Speedway Euro Championship. In Toruń, the Dane took the top of the podium, but he’s third in the interim classification.
Just from the beginning of Saturday's competition, Madsen confirmed his great disposition. Two heat wins made him one of the main candidates for the victory on Motoarena but in the following races he was less sucessfull. After a weaker performance at the end of the main round, the Dane had to fight his way up to the final in the "last chance" heat, where he passed the finish line on the second place.
In the final race of the day, Madsen took advantage of Nicki Pedersen's mistake, overtaking his fellow countryman and winning the heat. Interestingly, the last three championship events that took place in Toruń were victorious for Madsen. The Individual European Champion from two years ago won during last year's TAURON SEC round in Toruń, during the final round of FIM Speedway Grand Prix and during last Saturday's competition.
- It seems like Toruń is my lucky place. I won the last three times when I've been racing here, so it's pretty good. I was really struggling with the bikes and it was not easy because the track was super slick. I think I've never race on that slick track before. I'm very light. Usually, riders complain about they are too heavy but today I had no advantages from being light. It was tough, but we were working hard in the pit. We figured out, what to do and we got it at the end. In the final heat, Nicki made a mistake and I could take an advantage from that and win the race - said Leon Madsen at the press conference.
Despite the victory in Toruń, the Dane is not the leader of the interim classification. As he said, in the next rounds he will press on the leaders, Nicki Pedersen and Robert Lambert.
- I'm very happy with winning this round but not happy with the points I scored. We are at the top and that is where we want to be, but there are four rounds to go and we have to keep pushing – Madsen ended.
The second round of TAURON Speedway Euro Championship 2020 will be held in Bydgoszcz, 8th of July. The competition will start at 7 PM. Tickets for this event are available via eBilet.pl.
