The European Indidvidual Speedway Championships will begin in a little less than 90 days. This year's inaugural event will take place in Debrecen. The TAURON SEC is a major event for both the city of 200,000 inhabitants and the entire sporting community in Hungary.
Hungarian speedway had its "golden years" in the 1970s and 1980s. Over time, the sport lost its popularity, and Hungarians waited until the second decade of the 21st century for this to improve. Thanks to the construction of the track in Nagyhalasz and the reactivation of the Debrecen facility, speedway there received a ‘second life’. Mainly thanks to the involvement of the local community, Debrecen is hosting more and more prestigious events every year.
In 2019, our SpeedWolf Debrecen organization received an opportunity from the local authorities to manage the local facility. From the beginning, our main goal was to bring back the international competitions back to Debrecen. After organising several national tournaments, fans at the Perényi Pál Salakmotor Stadion witnessed events such as the European Pairs Championship semi-finals, FIM Speedway Grand Prix Qualifying and the SEC Challenge - said Norbert Barath, the president of the Debrecen club.
For one of Hungary’s speedway cities, the upcoming season will be full of prestigious events. Norbert Barath stresses that this is largely due to the local fans.
-The FIM Speedway Grand Prix pre-qualifying round will be hold hrere. The final round of the 250cc European Youth Championship will also come to Debrecen later this year. The fans, who show up in the stands every time, have played a huge role in the whole process of rebuilding our club – said Barath.
There are many indications that after this year’s events, which wille be held in Debrecen, the popularity of speedway in Hungary will significantly increase. Barath believes that this is a milestone in the development of the sport in the country.
-The upcoming TAURON SEC round will become the most prestigious event to take place here in recent history. I believe that this historic event will have a significant impact on the development of speedway in Hungary.
